IoT Device for Medical Autoclaves: What It Measures, Where It Attaches, and What It Does Not Do
Searching for an IoT device for a medical autoclave usually returns product pages before it returns explanations. This article does the opposite. It describes the chain component by component, states plainly what it measures, and is equally plain about what it leaves to the people running the machine.
What "IoT device" means in this context
It is easier to start with what it is not. It is not a new sterilizer. It is not a replacement control board. It is not a firmware change, and it is not a second thermostat that acts on the cycle. Nothing in the chain writes anything back to the autoclave.
What it is: an external measurement chain added alongside a machine already in service. It reads a physical quantity from the outside, converts it to a digital signal, carries that signal off the machine, and stores it as a record that can be retrieved later. The autoclave keeps doing exactly what it did before. When that machine is eventually replaced, the chain moves to the next one.
The chain, part by part
The probe. A PT100 resistance thermometer, four-wire, class AA, to IEC 60751. Four wires rather than two so that the resistance of the cable itself does not enter the reading. Class AA rather than class B because the tolerance band at sterilization temperatures is several times narrower, and a record is only as useful as the confidence you have in it.
The thermowell. The probe sits in a 316L stainless steel thermowell with a 1/2" BSP thread. The well protects the probe and makes it replaceable without disturbing the rest of the installation.
The mechanical attachment. The well is held against the drain line by a stainless steel clamp, with thermal paste at the interface and thermal insulation over the assembly where the environment justifies it. The paste is conductive, not insulating; the insulation goes on the outside of the assembly, not between the probe and the line.
The converter. A PT100-to-RS-485 converter turns the resistance reading into Modbus RTU. This is the point where a physical quantity becomes data.
The gateway. An RS-485 to Ethernet or Wi-Fi gateway carries the data off the machine and onto the network. The gateway is the only element in the chain that emits radio, which matters when the installation is discussed with a facility's technical department.
The platform. The records land in a monitoring platform where they are timestamped, stored and exported.
Two DC supplies in the 9 to 30 V range feed the converter and the gateway. On the wiring itself: shielded twisted four-wire cable to the probe, a twisted pair for A(D+) and B(D-) on the RS-485 side, the shield bonded to earth at one end only and on the cabinet side, and a 120 ohm termination if the device sits at the end of the line. None of that is exotic; it is ordinary industrial instrumentation practice, and it is the reason the chain behaves the same on day four hundred as on day one.
What it measures, and what it does not
The probe reads temperature. That is the whole of it. A PT100 is a resistance that changes with temperature, and no amount of wiring turns it into a pressure sensor.
Pressure appears in the record only where the autoclave itself exposes it on a digital output that the gateway can read. Some machines do, many do not, and it depends entirely on the model in front of you. Anyone who tells you that adding a probe gives you a pressure curve is describing something other than the physics.
The phase of the cycle, on the other hand, is legible from the temperature curve alone. Rise, plateau, descent: the shape of the curve carries that information without any additional sensor. A plateau that starts late, or drifts, or ends early, is visible to anyone reading the trace.
Where it attaches
The measurement is taken on the drain line, by external contact. Nothing is inserted into the fluid, nothing is drilled, the pressure envelope is never opened, and no wire is landed on the autoclave's control electronics. This is the single most important point of the whole installation, and it is what makes the chain addable to a machine that is already in daily use.

What the record actually looks like
Each cycle produces a continuous, timestamped temperature trace, stored and exportable. Not a pass or fail stamp. Not a printed strip that fades in a drawer. A curve you can open, read, and hand to someone.
There is a simple test of whether this is worth anything to a given practice or laboratory. If someone asked you today for the trace of a specific cycle run six months ago, what would you do? For most sites the honest answer involves a box of thermal paper and a certain amount of hope. That gap is the entire value of the record.
What it does not do
It does not decide anything. The system does not gate, block, approve or release a load. That decision belongs to qualified personnel, and building a device that took it away from them would change the nature of the product entirely.
It does not diagnose. It does not tell you that a pump is failing or that a valve needs attention. It shows you a curve, and a competent technician draws conclusions from it. The reasoning stays human.
It does not certify. The platform records and documents; it makes no claim about the outcome of a sterilization cycle, and it is not a substitute for the procedures a site already follows.
It sits alongside the machine, not against it
A worn machine at the end of its service life should be replaced, and no measurement chain changes that. What the chain does is make the record independent of the machine: it is installed on the sterilizer in use today, and it moves onto the next one when that day comes.
For a distributor, that is an addition to a sale rather than a competitor to it. The kit goes out with a new machine or onto one already in the field, and the monitoring continues across the customer's replacement cycle instead of ending with it.

Does it require modifying the autoclave? No. Nothing is drilled, the pressure envelope stays closed, and no connection is made to the control electronics.
Does the probe measure chamber temperature? It measures on the drain line by external contact. It records what the machine discharges; it is not a measurement taken inside the load.
Does it work with any brand? The mechanical chain works on any machine with an accessible drain line. Whether pressure or cycle data can additionally be read digitally depends on the outputs that particular model exposes.
Does it replace the operator's judgment? No. It gives the operator a record. The judgment stays where it is.
