Most service calls on sterilizers start the same way: a customer says something is wrong, a technician drives out, and the investigation begins on arrival. Continuous cycle records do not remove the visit. They remove the guesswork that precedes it.
Let us address the objection first
If you sell service contracts and bill for interventions, a supplier arriving with "you will make fewer visits" is describing a cut in your revenue. That is not the argument here, and we would rather say so plainly than dress it up.
What the technician knows before leaving
With records in place, the conversation that opens a service call changes shape. Before anyone gets in a van, your team can see:
- The cycles of the last weeks for that specific machine — rise, plateau, descent.
- Whether the reported problem shows up in the data at the time the customer says it happened.
- Whether it is an isolated event or a pattern that has been building.
- Whether other machines at the same site behave the same way, which often points at the room rather than the sterilizer.
None of that replaces the technician's judgement. It replaces the phone description, which is second-hand and usually incomplete through no fault of the person giving it.
The drift nobody notices
This is the case that makes the strongest impression on a service manager. A plateau that sits a fraction of a degree lower than it did six months ago is invisible on a printed strip and invisible to the operator, who sees a cycle end normally every day.
On a chart covering months, it is obvious. Whether that drift matters, and what causes it, is your technician's call — but they get to make that call while it is still a scheduled intervention rather than a machine down on a Monday morning with a full theatre list waiting.
What this is not
We are deliberate about this because the market is full of vague promises:
- This is not predictive maintenance. The system records temperature over time. It makes slow drift visible; it does not predict that a vacuum pump will fail in three weeks, and nobody should sell it as if it did.
- It does not diagnose. It shows what the temperature did. The cause is found by a technician, as before.
- It does not measure everything. The PT100 measures temperature; pressure appears only where the autoclave itself publishes it on a digital output the gateway can read.
- It never acts on the machine. Nothing is written back to the sterilizer, ever.
A service organisation that oversells this loses credibility with exactly the customers it needs most — the ones who understand their own equipment.
Coverage: the number that actually moves
For a service business, the constraint is rarely demand. It is how many accounts a technician can hold without service quality falling. Distances make that worse: a customer three hours away gets visited when someone is already in the area, or when the problem has become serious.
Records change that arithmetic. A machine that reports its cycles is a machine you can keep an eye on without driving to it, which means the accounts you can hold are no longer limited by the map. In markets where sites are spread out — and several of ours are — this is the difference between a regional service business and a national one.
Service contracts become defensible
Renewal conversations tend to be uncomfortable for the same reason every year: the customer sees an invoice and remembers nothing going wrong. Nothing going wrong is precisely what they paid for, but it does not feel like value.
With records, the renewal conversation has content: the cycles that ran, the alerts that were raised and handled, the drift that was caught early. You stop defending a contract with assurances and start reviewing it with a chart.

- Alert thresholds are set per machine, with the customer.
- Alerts go where they are useful — the customer, your service desk, or both.
- Your desk sees the curve before calling back, so the first question is specific instead of general.
- The intervention is prepared: the right part, the right expectation, the right slot.
- The visit is closed with the data, so both sides see the machine returning to its normal profile.

Biomedical service organisations gain the most, because service is their whole business rather than an accessory to equipment sales. Distributors with a service arm gain a reason to stay in contact with accounts between purchases.
